One of the major attractions that brings so many eager visitors to our shores are the crystal-clear, emerald Gulf waters. The natural beauty of this section of the sea offers the perfect complement to a variety of water-related activities from snorkeling to paddle boarding. Perhaps one of the most iconic pastimes taking place on the Emerald Coast is the world-class fishing.
The families that worked in this industry helped to found a majority of our communities, giving birth to the modern 30A that we know and love. Although the commercial industry has become less integral to our economy, it is still a favorite hobby for locals and visitors alike. With this history in mind, it is also no surprise that the area plays host to some of the most renowned angling tournaments in the country. Open to amateurs and professionals alike, bring your rod, tackle box, and bait along on your next trip to 30A to try your luck on our famed Emerald Coast waters!

Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic
Deciding it was time that the 30A area began hosting big money fishing tournaments, a group of local businessmen and fishing enthusiasts set about creating the Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic in 2003. Now ranked as the fifth largest “Big Money Tournament” by Marlin magazine, the classic has grown from 180 anglers and $371,250 in cash awards to include 571 anglers and over $2,040,200 in cash awards. Sanctioned by the World Billfish Series and serving as a qualifying event for the IGFA World Championship Circuit, its rapid growth stands as a testament to why anglers of all skill levels travel from around the world to attend this extraordinary event. Typically taking place in June, you can reserve your place in this year’s tournament to have a shot at their massive cash award and enjoy the invaluable time you spend on the water with your team.
Founded to help raise awareness and combat the growing problems that lionfish are causing throughout the Gulf, the Emerald Coast Open has grown to be the largest lionfish tournament ever with the largest cash payouts. This tournament is no ordinary fishing excursion though. Participants are required to dive to catch their pray, due to the unlikelihood of these predators being caught on hook and line. Fortunately, the lionfish is as tasty as it is invasive, allowing both Gulf habitats and your stomach to benefit from your efforts. Learn more about joining the open and helping to contribute to this great cause in May of next year.
Just in case your trip happens to fall outside of all the aforementioned events, The Emerald Coast Redfish Circuit hosts tournaments at a variety of locations around the area throughout the year. They are a family-oriented fishing club for anglers of all skill levels, promoting “artificial only” catch and release redfishing in a fun and competitive atmosphere. Learn techniques for catching these game fish and test your skills against other top anglers in the area by signing up for one of these fun tournaments.
